Reflection: an important tool for growth

StudioXR is increasingly running large-scale and international productions. That’s no small feat, considering we’ve only been an active part of Innovam. As icing on the cake, the reviews are also very complimentary. For example, people regularly comment on the good atmosphere within the team and on the shop floor, and recently our team spirit was described as simply ‘remarkable’ after a marathon broadcast to over 150 international trainees. So we are proud and celebrate these success stories exuberantly. Yet we also continue to take a critical look at our work. After all, a well-oiled machine is the result of hard work and good maintenance. In this blog, we take you behind the scenes and tell you how we do it.

Core Values

To ensure that we always get the most out of our work, we at StudioXR find it extra important that the colleagues central. Of course we strive for the best possible production, but that depends on the human (thinking) power needed to bring this magic to life. This means that we place great value on our core values:

  • Everyone is equally important
  • Everyone has a unique role
  • Everyone should be able to enjoy their work
  • Everyone should be able to work in a safe environment

We would like to go into that last point in more detail. While the first three values might be considered standard, a safe working environment does not come naturally. As a growing team, we believe it is important that everyone has the opportunity to celebrate success, or conversely, to learn from mistakes without being judged for them. Therefore, time is always taken after each production to look back on the work. As a result, we never “accidentally” complete projects successfully, but are able to make sure we get better and raise the bar time and time again. And this is reflected in our results.

Reflecting is science

StudioXR consists of a team of professionals who work from passion and trust. Everyone takes and gives space to grow. How can we do this better next time? How can that process be more efficient? These questions are an important part of our behind-the-scenes process. When we look at scientific studies that have been done into the origins of these types of reflections, it appears that the kickstart behind the success of our productions can be divided into 3 primary components.

Surprise

As human beings, we often tend to fill in situations. We imagine all kinds of possible scenarios regarding how others may react to an idea or workflow and are often totally surprised when it turns out that the outcome is completely different from what we imagined. Because of this surprise, we begin to reflect on our thinking patterns. Why were we thinking this? Why did we assume this? And more importantly, what now? Through surprise, movement is created. Through movement comes growth. So we always try to address the power of surprise.

Learning from Mistakes

Despite you may not see much of it in our end productions, we have good news: behind the scenes (and sometimes before!) we all make mistakes from time to time. And despite it’s no fun to see work fail, there’s always a very clear lesson in what goes wrong: “This is how not to do it.” But how should it be done? We reflect on what happened, which part of the workflow failed and how to overcome that next time. There is profit in every failure, as long as you take the time to examine it. This is how we ensure that every production is better than and previous one.

Communications

Frustration is something human, and despite the fact that we may associate this emotion with something negative, it is important to recognize that this is not always the case. In fact, frustration sets people in motion, and as stated earlier, motion leads to growth. One thing is crucial here: communication. Staying in conversation with colleagues about what does not feel right and where this feeling comes from is most important. After all, as a team you have the same goal in mind: to always deliver the best possible product. This requires trust, communication and teamwork, even when something does not work out.

By continuing to nurture this type of process, we can consistently retain customer responses like those in the opening and continue to celebrate our success stories into the future. Would you also like to see one of your ideas become a successful product? Then make an appointment with us today, we’d love to think with you.
